The Floral Landers

The Floral Landers

Floral Landers and Basset Hounds!

Ahh, the floral denim shorts of my dreams!

If you have spent any time wandering through the online sewing community, you will have found that the Lander pattern is a frequent make with so many of the makers having wonderfully informative posts.  Seeing all those makes, reading their fitting advice and modifications finally made me brave enough to try them.

The short version is that they have wonderfully covered every aspect of the Landers, and I have no additional construction or fitting wisdom to add.  All I can add is some fabulous floral stash denim, a slight personal fear of high waisted pants, and a new love of the Landers. So if you want to hear more about that, please continue reading below.

First, can we stop and talk about how fantastic this floral denim fabric is?  I’ll be utterly honest, my younger self would have shuddered at this floral fabric.  All I can say now is, thank the heavens for the gift of a little age. M gave me this denim when she was cleaning out her sewing stash, shortly after my first Ginger jean make.  Since that blessed day, I’ve been saving this for something fantastically fun. Enter a little bravery, and I decided on the Landers.

I must also note, my hesitation with the Landers was entirely for personal reasons and nothing to do with the pattern.  Every True Bias pattern I have made has been great. My hesitation was entirely to do with a general aversion of high waisted pants in my personal wardrobe.  I have never been able to rock a high waisted jean. I never found them comfortable and the fit was always horrible on me. The 90’s resulted in a general avoidance and dislike of the high waisted pant in my wardrobe.

After the empowering Ginger jean make, I began to wonder if my aversion to high waisted jeans was actually only rooted in the fit of the jeans.  I’m sure you’ve already come to this conclusion, however, I needed a while to mull it over. I decided to try the Landers as I knew I could adjust the fit now and actually find out if I might like them.  And I did!

The floral denim was perfect for the shorts as it allowed me to add a splash of the denim but not be overwhelmed by the print.  I made the straight size of the Lander shorts and have worn them as much as the cooler summer has allowed. The floral shorts just make me smile, and will continue to bring joy through many future summers!  They even match my Datura blouse!

PS.  I still have enough floral denim left for another make.  That gem will be back.
